Cardioid
Use cardioid for centered whispering, one-person roleplay, or a prop that stays in front. It reduces pickup from the rear, but it does not remove computer fans, traffic, or room reflections.
Omnidirectional
Use omni only when sound should arrive from around the microphone. It can suit a group or room-based scene, but in an untreated room it records more of the environment you are trying to hide.
Bidirectional
Bidirectional favors the front and rear. It can serve two performers facing each other or a deliberate front-back action, but it is not a shortcut to ear-shaped binaural recording.

Set gain from the meter, not the knob position
A knob setting such as “10 o'clock” is not portable advice. The result changes with mouth distance, prop volume, operating-system input level, recording app, table vibration, and room noise.
- Freeze the software levelChoose one input level in the operating system or recording app and leave it there during the test. Adjusting hardware gain and software trim at the same time makes the result impossible to diagnose.

For video, 48 kHz is the practical project sample rate. If the classic Yeti is presented by your system as 16-bit, recording into a 24-bit project does not create missing microphone resolution; it can still be convenient for the editing workflow. Do not resample repeatedly between applications.
Placement changes more than software
Whispering
Begin about 4–8 inches from the side of the grille. Aim the mouth slightly past the microphone rather than directly into it. Move closer before adding gain when the room is audible.
Tapping
Keep the object far enough away that its hardest transient does not clip. Put the stand on a folded towel or isolation pad so the desk does not become part of every tap.
Brushing
Start at the edge of the grille, not pressed against it. Test the loudest bristle contact and listen for low-frequency handling noise before moving closer.
Left-right movement
Use stereo, keep the microphone upright, label a test “left” and “right,” and preserve that orientation through editing. A reversed clip breaks the relationship between hand movement and sound.

Mixed voice and props
Choose stereo only if movement is essential; otherwise cardioid is easier to control. Put the stand on a soft pad and keep the keyboard, mouse, and cable off the recording surface.
What to change when the result sounds wrong
Move closer before adding filters
Lower gain, bring the whisper or prop closer, point the cardioid rear toward the main noise source, and record at a quieter time. Acoustic foam does not block neighbors or traffic.
Go off-axis
Move the mouth slightly to one side and speak past the capsule. A pop filter can help, but distance and angle solve more without changing the visual setup.
Break the vibration path
Place the stand on a dense soft pad and stop touching the desk during takes. Add a compatible shock mount or arm only if the basic isolation does not work.
Make the movement wider and verify channels
Confirm stereo mode, keep the Yeti facing forward, and move the source deliberately around the left and right sides. A sound held in the center should remain centered.
Improve signal at the capsule
Move the source closer, reduce room and device noise, and test a different USB port or cable path. Heavy denoising can erase the fine texture ASMR depends on.
Test transients, not whispers
Turn gain down and repeat the hardest impact. If the whisper then feels quiet, automate level later instead of sacrificing the loud transient during capture.
If you do not own a Yeti yet
